Nellie the Elephant
Listening to Paul Hiney on Radio 4 while we had breakfast this morning - healthy, low-GI pancakes with pears from the garden - and I discovered that the song of choice for cardio-pulmonary resuscitation is “Nellie the Elephant”. Apparently everybody sings it at the same kind of speed and it is just the right tempo for the heart massage, with the “trump trump trump” at the right point for giving a breath.
Now, I’ve done first aid at work courses and anybody needing CPR from me (nobody as yet, thankfully) would have had a hard time of it. I could never remember how many pumps to do before giving a breath, so either their heart would be doing overtime or they’d suffocate. But those days are over! Armed now with the “Nellie” information I can confidently offer decent first aid to all and sundry. Now I just need to find a victim. Erm, I mean casualty.
